OrdinaryTheology.com Programme for October – December 2025

I’m pleased to announce a programme of events for the latter part of 2025 to be held at Pusey House, Oxford.

The programme kicks off with a Study Day looking at the life, times and contribution of the inspired (but also contentious) Early Church figure of Origen of Alexandria.

Since a constant and key part of his life’s work was teaching and preaching, we’ll then use some of his texts as the focus of a Reading Group on Origen over the following 7 weeks.

With it being the 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea, the next event in the calendar is entitled “Begotten not Made” – The Fourth Century Formation of the Doctrine of the Trinity. This Study Day will provide an introduction and background to the events at the Council of Nicaea (325 AD), from which the original Nicene Creed emerged.

The Council wasn’t the end of the matter by any means and the debate rumbled on until the Council of Constantinople (381 AD). So we’ll also follow the debate up to this point, effectively surveying how the doctrine of the Trinity was established in the fourth century,

One of the key protagonists in the Trinitarian debate (and a champion of orthodoxy) was St Athanasius, so he warrants his own Study Day on Sat 29th November.

The programme for 2025 then concludes with another Reading Group in which we’ll work through St Athanasius’ classic text “On the Incarnation”. An ideal first text to read if you’ve never tried anything from the Early Church before.

Note: Whilst all of the other events will be held onsite at Pusey House, this last Reading Group will be ONLINE only to enable a wider audience to participate.

If you have any questions, please get in touch. I hope to see you at one or more of these events!
